AFTER more than ten years of keeping the province polio-free, the Pangasinan Provincial Health Office will launch an enhanced disease surveillance and vaccination for children in the face of a declared polio outbreak in the country.

Dra. Anna De Guzman, PHO head, called on local governments and health workers to embark on a campaign for oral polio vaccine coverage for kids 5 years old and below.

She advised parents to bring their children ages 15 and below to the nearest health center when symptoms such as fever, pain in the bones and muscles are felt.

She said despite the fact that there is no cure for the disease, there are practicable ways which can prevent its acquisition.

She said it can be done by maintaining through frequent handwashing, and ensuring that the water one is drinking is potable.

She also pointed out that urban city like Urdaneta are high risks for polio because a big number of people move in and could be possible carriers of the polio virus.

Meantime, a mass immunization in the province will be conducted on October 24 in observance of the World Polio Day. (Melody Valenton)
