THE National Food Authority (NFA) has started to procure produce of local farmers at P20.40 per kilo for class A palay and P19.33 of class B palay amid claims of farmers that their palay are being bought by traders at P7 only.

According to Chona Maramba, Assistant Provincial Manager of NFA Pangasinan, her agency  started to buy farmers’ rice because private traders in Pangasinan had dropped the price of  palay at P12 per kilo.

Meanwhile, NFA expects prices to drop in the weeks ahead as farmers in the province have begun harvesting for the season.

Maramba said farmers in parts of Alaminos City, Aguilar and Mangatarem and Eastern Pangasinan have started harvesting.

The new harvest will add to the more than 141,000 bags of NFA rice stored in agency’s warehouses in Mangatarem, Alaminos, Lingayen and Dagupan.

NFA rice is open for sale at P27 per kilo. While commercial rice is sold at P32 up to P40.

Imported commercial rice available in the market from private traders are procured in Vietnam.  (Nora Dominguez)
