Farmers alarmed by low palay-buying price

FARMERS in Pangasinan are alarmed on seeing price drop in palay from P10 to P12 a kilo only and are pointing to the rice tarrification as the culprit.

Ernesto Pamoceno, president of Farmers Irrigators Association of Pangasinan said other provinces are experiencing worse at P8 per kilo. Fully dried palay only fetch at P14 to P16 a kilo, he added.

He said with the increasing oil price, farm inputs, insecticide, fertilizer, among others, a farmer spends P14 to produce a kilo of palay. “With this, farmers will no longer go farming,” he said.

He said they have a resolution urging authorities to study the effects of rice tariffication.

“Farmers really need help,” Pamoceno said.

He said other countries give different subsidy to farmers but their Filipino counterpart has nothing. “So what will happen to Filipino farmers?,” he said.

He said farmers who till about one hectare only are desperate especially those who are sending their children to school. (PhilStar Wire Service)
