Biggest flag hoisted in Sto. Tomas

STO. Tomas is the smallest town in land area and population in Pangasinan, but it stood tall again for raising the biggest flag in Pangasinan or possibly in Region 1.

Mayor Timoteo Villar III said it was raised on the flagpole for the first time last Monday’s flag ceremony.

He said it saddens him that the Philippine flag is not accorded due respect in some areas in the country so he had one made to help to instill in the minds of his constituents the respect for the flag as a reflection of the townsfolk’s unity and sense of patriotism.

He said he received a donation to have the flag measuring 2.43 m. by 3.65 m. for a 15m. high flagpole, “perhaps the tallest in Pangasinan even if we are not the Capitol”.

Every year during Independence Day celebration, former and incumbent town officials display the Philippine flag in front of their homes.

“I want that though our town is the smallest , we want what our former mayors did, namely the late secretary Antonio Villar Jr. and his wife, Vivien Villar, with our two Guinness world titles, have done for us,” Mayor Villar III said.

The town had two Guinness titles, the Longest Barbecue, its 3,803.96m long of uninterrupted grills on Feb. 11, 2008 and the Longest Table for setting up uninterrupted line of tables measuring six kilometers long on April 2, 2017.

Based on 2015 census, the town has a population of 15,022 living in a land area of 12.99 square kilometers with only 10 barangays. (PhilStar Wire Service)
