IN compliance with the directive of President Duterte to the police to close and stop all gambling activities earlier authorized by the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office and the order of P/Col. Rederico Maranan to stop all forms of illegal gambling in Pangasinan, the Villasis Police Station issued a memorandum to all barangay chairmen not to allow any form of illegal gambling in their respective communities.

P/Major Fernando Fernandez Jr, town police chief, citing the memorandum from Pangasinan Police Provincial Office, listed Peryahan ng Bayan, Small Town Lottery, Keno and other similar gambling activities throughout the country, said “all forms of illegal gambling are also prohibited at all times”.

Maranan identified the use of cards, spider mahjong, “bularit” (illegal cockfighting), jueteng, basketball ending game, “cara y cruz”, including gambling during wake for the dead.

Fernandez warned of penalties for any violation of the directives.

In an interview, Fernandez said he observed that gamblers from far-flung areas, go to a wake not to condole with the bereaved family but to gamble, which is prohibited under P.D. 1602 and 9287.

He said the memorandum was issued on the advice of Mayor Nonato Abrenica so that  people are informed through their respective barangay chairmen before the anti-illegal gambling campaign is strictly implemented. (PhilStar Wire Service)
