A proposal of Pugaro Suit barangay council seeking authority to use the unfinished Tsunami Hill in their village as a dumpsite for biodegradable wastes is under study by the Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP).

According to SP Majority Floor Leader Michael Fernandez, the proposal was contained in a committee report of the Environment and Natural Resources and Barangay Affairs Committees.

The Tsunami Hill, planned by then Mayor Benjamin Lim in 2013 was to protect residents of the island village against a tsunami.

The P20-million project, the first phase of which costs P7 million was already spent for its foundation, a circular embankment formed by boulders.

It was discontinued by then Mayor Fernandez on the advice Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) as the planned structure would be useless since it was too close to the shore and would defeat the purpose since residents would be running towards the sea instead of away from it.

Abandoned, the structure lays wasted, hence, the proposal to convert it into a dumpsite. (Leonardo Micua)
