THE Sangguniang Panlalawigan adopted a resolution requesting Senate President Vicente C. Sotto III and Sen. Panfilo M. Lacson to allocate funds for the rehabilitation and upgrading of the Lingayen Airport.

The resolution authored by Board Member Nestor D. Reyes, cited the need of the provincial government to promote domestic and foreign tourism and the development of trade, commerce and industry in the province and pointed to the status of the the Lingayen Airport, presently classified as a feeder airport envisioned to cater to the air transportation needs of the province.

Given its present state, the board members said the Lingayen Airport has not been adequately maintained neither has any improvement been made to modernize it compared to existing developed airports of other provinces in the country.

Given the need to rehabilitate and upgrade the facility will require funds for its rehabilitation and upgrading Board Member Jeremy Agerico Rosario suggested the creation of an adhoc committee to look into the status or development of the Lingayen Airport.

It can be recalled that Dept. of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Arthur Tugade in his visit to Pangasinan last April, has disclosed that national government supports the upgrading of  the Lingayen Airport for commercial operations.

Initially, the airport needs to expand its runway, from the existing 1,178.79 meters (1.17 kilometer) runway, to around 1,634.02 (1.63 kilometer) to accommodate commercial flights.  (PIO/RRB)
