THE mayor of Villasis closed on Aug. 1 a poultry farm in Barangay Capulaan due to health risks to residents posed by its operations.

Mayor Nonato Abrenica ordered the closure of Amazing Grace Poultry Farm in a letter addressed to Gonzalo Dumlao, owner of the farm.

Abrenica cited the results of the ocular inspection made and it was determined that the farm violated the terms of condition for the poultry’s operations.

“Your negligence resulted in the presence of voluminous flies around Capulaan that affected the lives of people in that community,”  the mayor wrote.

He said the suspension of Dumlao’s business permit takes effect immediately and indefinitely and warned against a continued operations.

“You are not allowed to operate until further notice due to the violation of our conditions that severely pollute the environment in your area as well as endangering the lives of the residents especially the children,” he wrote.

In an interview, Abrenica said it is the third poultry farm in the area that he closed down due to flies infestation in communities.

He said he learned about the residents’ problems with Amazing Grace Poultry Farm when he attended a wedding reception in the area and visitors were made to eat in a section with a mosquito net so that flies would not disturb them.

The mayor said Dumlao went to his office to explain but he continued with the closure saying he could not sacrifice people’s health in exchange of investment.

The poultry farm has about 10,000 heads of chicken but harvest was already over, Abrenica added.

He said once the poultry farm owner complies with requirements to correct the problem and the community has validated the compliance, the suspension order will be lifted. (PhilStar Wire Service)
