ARCINUE DEFEATED IN SUAL

SUAL–Environmentalists here hailed the defeat of the Arcinue political family that ruled Sual for 15 years, and expressed hope that that their proposal for the establishment of the second coal-fired power plant here will finally be junked.

Lisaldo Calugay PDP-LABAN), a retired police sergeant and mayoralty candidate, scored an upset against come-backing former three-term mayor John Rodney Arcinue (NP),

Calugay, a political neophyte, garnered 12,101 votes against Arcinue’s 10,434 votes or a difference of 1,667 votes.

Meanwhile, Calugay’s running-mate Dionel Caburao prevailed over incumbent Mayor Roberto Arcinue, father of John Rodney, in the vice mayoralty race.

Although Roberto was still eligible to run for one more term, he decided to run for vice mayor to allow his son John Rodney to take his place.

During the campaign, the Arcinues were pushing for the establishment of a second coal-fired power plant in Barangay Baquioen, Sual.

The existing Sual Coal-fired Power Plant, which is generating 1,200 megawatts for the Luzon Grid, is located in Barangay Pangascasan, Sual.

Opposing the establishment of the second coal-fired power plant is is Save the Sual Movement led by Ms. Rosario Soriano.

A report said members of the movement supported the Calugay-Caburao tandem because they believe that a new administration in Sual, will be environment-friendly.
