One good vote can make a change – Villegas

ONE good vote can change kahirapan, korapsyon, kabastusan, kasinungalingan and kamatayan or 5Ks that plague the Philippine government, according Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas during a forum on March 27 at the PHINMA (University of Pangasinan) in Dagupan City.

Villegas, in his homily prior to the program, told the crowd, composed mostly of students, during the “One good vote 2019 advocacy campaign” organized by the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting and the Commission on Elections.

The top problem of the country is kahirapan due to lack of jobs, medicine for the indigent patients, classrooms, housing, hunger, among others, he said.

Korapsyon, Villegas said, is an issue that even a Grade 1 pupil now knows its meaning as this happens right in his or her own home or school, adding that corruption is not only taking away government funds but poor people’s money.

Kabastusan he said is not normal, as well as laughing about rape or the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) or looking down at women.

Kasinungalingan is about spread of fake news. A candidate who spreads fake news is not pro-God,” he said.

Kamatayan is about the 30,000 people who have been allegedly killed in the government’s anti-drug war. “It doesn’t mean we are pro-drugs. We hate drugs but death is not the solution,” he said.

He pointed out that the police said the drug problem has worsened. “Can we bring back the 30,000 lives of our fellowmen who were lost?,” he asked.

He urged the people to “vote for God, vote for life, vote for courtesy, vote for good manners, vote for charity, vote for the poor because politics cannot be improved if we separate God.” (Philstar Wire Service)
