Manaoag, Malasiqui, Sto. Tomas, Sual triumph

BRACKET B QUARTER FINALS

LINGAYEN– The quarterfinals edition of the 3rd Governors’s Cup Inter-Town City Basketball Tournament continues to sizzle.

Manaoag, Malasiqui, Sto. Tomas and Sual under Group B bracket crashed their respective nemesis on the second day of quarterfinals held at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center (NRSCC) Gymnasium on February 24.

Manaoag, former second runner up in the season season, waylaid Bautista in a lopsided match. Famed for their speed and heavy-duty offense, Manaoag cagers dominated as early as the first quarter, 26-16, putting Bautista in arduous state to cut the lead.

The second quarter was intensified by flying dunk shots by Manaoag’s towering cager, Mark Christian Meneses, leaving the basketball spectators in loud cheers. Bautista has no left to go but to strengthen their team’s offense at the third quarter but the ball still favored Manaoag with 40 points advantage against the former, 89-49.

Manaoag sustained their lead and maneuvered to post a lead as high as 36 points in the last five minutes of the fourth quarter. Meanwhile, Bautista never stopped and fought back to close the lead, yet, Manaoag cagers were all determined to wrap the game and haul a victory for their town. Manaoag trounced Bautista with a 39-point advantage, 121-82.

Malasiqui subdued Mangatarem, 101-91 in a hard-fought game. The first quarter favored Malasiqui with a hard-earned 10-point lead against their nemesis, 28-18. Driven to defeat Mangatarem, Malasiqui cagers displayed superior basketball plays and endurance, ending the second quarter with a 15-point advantage, 53-38 and continued to dominate until the fourth quarter whopping Mangatarem with a 10-point advantage.

Sto. Tomas upset Asingan, 84-89, in a close match. Sto. Tomas started the game with thrill through their sticky defense. The first deadlock, 28-28, between two competing teams was recorded in the second quarter with four minutes and nine seconds left in the shot clock. The second quarter ended with Sto. Tomas leading, 42-32. It intensified its offense in the 3rd quarter with a 15-point advantage, 71-56 and further sustained its momentum a with a 10-point advantage in the last one minute of the game.

The last match featured two equally-competitive and able teams – Sual and Alaminos City – but Sual walked away with a 78-76.  The crucial first quarter ended with a deadlock, 17-17. The second quarter saw back-to-back three point shots by Alaminos City’s sniper cagers but Sual soon countered with a 2-point lead.  38-36. Alaminos claimed supremacy at the end of the third quarter with a three-point lead against their nemesis, 59-53.

In the last two minutes of the game, Sual had a one-point edge against Alaminos, and managed to sustain its lead  in the end. (PIO/SMDG)
