TALLEST BAMBOO STATUE

BAYAMBANG—This town will attempt to land its second Guinness World Records (GWR) record when it unveils on April 5 the 51-meter tall statue of St. Vincent Ferrer made of engineered bamboo as the tallest in the world.

The unveiling of the soon-to-be iconic monument stands majestically at the Saint Vincent Park located in Barangay Bani will be the highlight of the celebration of the 405th  founding anniversary of Bayambang.

In 2014, Bayambang won the Guinness World Records for the longest barbecue grill that measured 8,000 m (20,246 ft) during the Malangsi Fish-tival to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the town.

Mayor Cezar T. Quiambao has earlier said, “Now we are creating a landmark for people to remember and recognize Bayambang.” The statue has a steel frame and bamboo panels as cladding material.

Architect Jerry Suratos, project manager for St. Vincent Ferrer Prayer Park, said polygons instead of sculptors, were used for the figure to save time and money.

He is optimistic the image will be finished on time as workers are working overtime to beat their deadline.

He said it will be first category for the GWR title, it being the tallest made of engineered bamboo. Burma holds the title for having the tallest steel structure. “

“Ours is different so we are not trying to beat any title”, he added.

He said 60 tons of bamboos bought in China with customized density assured to last for 25 years were used.

An adjudicator from the GWR will attend ceremonies to confirm the claim of a record,

Dr. Henry Fernandez, hermano mayor of the quadri-centennial celebration, described the occasion as different from other town fiesta celebrations.

The town fiesta celebration will coincide with the observance of the 400th year of the foundation of St. Vincent Ferrer Parish (the physical church was built in 1869), and worldwide, the commemoration of the 600th year of the saint’s death. (PhilStar Wire Service)
