FOUR AREAS IN WATCH LIST

THE Provincial Health Office (PHO) is closely monitoring cases of measles in Pangasinan as the number of patients and deaths continue to rise.

As of February 11, the PHO has so far recorded three deaths with 122 suspected cases of measles, already slightly higher compared to last year’s cases for the same period.

Of the  number, 23 cases were already confirmed through laboratory examinations.

The three deaths reported last month aged from three months old to 31 years old.

PHO has placed four areas in the top watchlist topped by Dagupan City followed by Bugallon, Mangaldan and San Fabian.

Dagupan City Heath Office (CHO) chief Dr. Ofelia Rivera said her unit is implementing “active surveillance” in all barangays in the city, immediately attending to persons suspected of having the symptoms of measles while teams make the rounds of barangays to  do vaccination.

Rivera confirmed that the Dengvaxia scare in media created the resistance towards vaccinations. “It has affected our immunization program, they don’t want their children immunized because they are scared, “ she said.

She said news of outbreak and deaths among children with measles are finally being brought to health centers to be immunized, after they got scared,” Rivera added. (Jojo Rinoza)
