Couple celebrates 66 years of love in marriage

URBIZTONDO—She is 98 while he is 96.

They have been married for 66 long years and manage to stay in love.

On February 2, the family, close relatives and friends joined the couple, Concepcion Palisoc Sison, wearing a blue Filipiniana long gown terno, and Pedro Sindayen Sison, clad in Barong Tagalog, in celebrating their special occasion with a thanksgiving mass and renewal of their marriage vows presided by a priest at the Kabaleyan Cove Resort in San Carlos City.

Their secret? “It’s a simple give and take, listening to each other to avoid a clash,”  Concepcion said. “There never was a day when we failed to patch up our differences,” she added.

The couple’s sons, Second District Board Member Raul Sison and Barangay Captain Rafael Sison, assisted their parents in their wheelchairs enter the wedding reception.

Pedro, a known cockfight aficionado and owned a cockpit arena, had served as barangay captain, councilor, vice mayor and mayor while  Concepcion, is a retired education district supervisor.

The Sison couple has five children, namely, Sonia, Rafael, Josefina, Raul and Margarit and

27 grandchildren.

Raul confirmed what his mother said that their parents’ secret for their everlasting love and longevity, is having no fights and enjoying a worry-less life.

“They don’t fight pero nag susutil-sutilan lang. Grabeng magsutilan yang dalawang yan, ” Raul said. “I’m praying for them to reach 100 years old,” he added.

Raul added that one family tradition that the couple keeps to this day is gathering everyone during special occasions like Christmas, New Year and birthday celebrations of their children and grandchildren.

“We would pray together during Christmas and New Year and no matter how busy each of us is, we are all together,” he added.

 Concepcion impressed the guests with her spiel when she took the microphone to thank them as she acknowledged their blessing for having children who love them so much.

“Thank you, thank you, my dear children, for gathering these people who love and care for us,” she said .

Pedro was well-applauded for rendering a Pangasinan love song Malinac Lay Labi.

Concepcion said she is not the jealous type “because I know Pedro is trustworthy” and the secret to their everlasting love is to give and take. “When one commits a mistake, she or he must be forgiven as if nothing had happened,” she stressed

Their grandchild, Urbiztondo Mayor Martin Raul Sison II, said he shares a bond with his grandfather by calling each other “idol” and he proved this by calling out to him and Pedro responded with “idol” to the delight of the guests.

He said his grandmother remains a teacher to him up to now and has taught him how to speak in public effectively. (Philstar Wire Service)
