44 firearms seized, 48 persons arrested

ELECTION GUN BAN IN REGION

FORTY-four firearms were seized and 48 persons arrested in Pangasinan in connection with the intensified campaign of the police against loose firearms relative to the gun ban imposed by the Commission on Elections since the election period started January 13 this year.

P/Chief Supt. Romulo Sapitula, PRO 1 regional director, said Pangasinan so far topped in the number of firearms seized and number of persons arrested in the region.

 The Regional Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (RCIDG) reported 78 assorted firearms seized and 65 persons arrested Region 1: 8 firearms seized and six persons arrested in La Union, 19 firearms seized and seven persons arrested in Ilocos Sur, and 3 firearms seized and 2 persons were arrested in Ilocos Norte.

 Of the 78 firearms seized during checkpoint operations, service of search warrants, ISO operations and other police in the region, 65 were low powered while 13 were high-powered firearms.

Sapitula ordered the intensified conduct of police operations and strict implementation of gun ban against loose and unregistered firearms to prevent violence this coming elections.

Meanwhile, 17 firearms were surrendered while 35 incumbent officials, 40 candidates and 53 civilians (126 total) in the region deposited their licensed firearms.
