VILLASIS—Watch out for this town’s unique town fiesta this year.

Villasis, known as the Vegetable Bowl of Pangasinan, will gather all the “town queens” from 2002-2018 in an event dubbed as “Tribute to the Queens’  on Jan. 19 at the town auditorium.

Mayor Nonato Abrenica said it was time to pay tribute to the town’s past queens and their entourage who through their participation and involvement made the construction of new buildings – municipal hall, legislative building, park, auditorium, among other edifices- possible.

He said the beauty popularity contests, a fund-raising competition, were instrumental in enabling the town to complete big infrastructure projects.

He said this year, there will be no queen to be crowned, no town beauties selected “but a time to pay tribute to the queens who helped transform Villasis into what it is today.”

“We are going to honor them for sharing their blessings with our town since 2002, during my term and my wife’s administration,” Abrenica said.

Abrenica recalled that in one popularity contest for Ms. Villasis raised P12-million that helped build a new municipal building.

“It’s fitting and at the same time, it allows us to look back with gratitude to the people who have been generously helping our town,” he added as he assured his constituents that the funds raised every year through popularity contests from choosing the town “queen” every year were judiciously used by the local government.

He said the transparency of the government helped encourage townsfolk to generously donate through their chosen contestants.

He said past town “queens and princesses” who are already abroad are coming home for the parade and tribute on the night of Jan. 19 at the town auditorium which will also be known as the Grand Balikbayan Night.

During the parade, all the town “queens”, the first to third princesses will be grouped and ride separately in floats.

The Sangguniang Bayan (legislative) building was also named after one of the town queens under whose reign the funds used were sourced from.

The town was also able to purchase heavy equipment for road projects also from proceeds of their annual popularity contests. (PhilStar Wire Service)
