City blood council conducts mobile blood collection

THE Dagupan City Blood Coordinating Council conducted a mobile blood donation event under the theme: “A Blood to Give, a Life to Save” at the CSI the City Mall atrium on January 24.
The activity was a regular program of the council organized by Mayor Belen T. Fernandez to help indigent patients in need of blood.
The blood collected during the activity will be used by patients suffering from different kinds of illnesses that necessitate blood transfusions such as those with cancer, massive bleeding and trauma, laboring mothers and many more.
Rhyza Ventenilla, the council’s focal person, said keeping stock of donated blood is necessary not just for emergency situations but in preparation for future disasters or calamities.
At least 200 blood donors participated in the activity, with each donating at least 400 to 450 milliliters of blood.
Community-Based Mobile Blood Donation Coordinator (CBMBDC) Alexis Marquez disclosed that all donors first underwent the stages of screening before blood extraction. These included an interview, physical examination, blood typing and hemoglobin count.
He also added that blood donors were from 16 to 65 years old, weighing more than 50 kilograms and should have the standard hemoglobin count before they were allowed to donate their blood.
All collected blood will be transferred to the Region 1 Medical Center for further screening for Transfusion-Transmissible Infections. (Verdelle De Vera/CIO)
