SUAL—Hundreds of workers will be needed if the construction of the second coal-fired power plant in Sual pushes through.

This was learned from representatives of the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) who are currently holding talks with municipal officials headed by Mayor Roberto Arcinue for the construction of the power plant.

They said more than 400 regular employees alone will be needed for the operation of the plant.  And most of the workers will be sourced come from Sual as provided for by an ordinance that requires investors to tap Sual residents for their manpower requirements, if they qualify.

He added that some P800 million in real property taxes can be collected annually from the proposed power plant, which will be shared by the province, the municipality of Sual and the Barangay Baquioen where the plant will be located.

Arcinue said an overwhelming majority of Sual residents including womenfolk, senior citizens, farmers and fisherfolk, employees, and students who stand to benefit through the scholarship program of the project proponent, welcomed the project.

The project proponent is expected to spend about two billion U.S. dollars for the plant which will have  a generating capacity of 1,000 megawatts that is expected to boost and stabilize the power supply for the Luzon grid to do away with frequent power interruptions.

The construction of the second coal-fired power plant, he added, dovetails with the pronouncement of President Duterte who stressed the need to put up more coal-fired power plants to avert another power crisis owing to ballooning population and influx of investors.,

Among these new technologies in the news power plant is the ultra-super critical coal-fired power plant which at present is considered as a “High Efficiency Low Emission (HELE) Technology” and as a “green technology”, KEPCO said.

Its high efficiency can reach of up to 45% which substantially cut its GHG emission by 30% compared to its predecessors or older coal fired power plants having efficiencies as low as 33% only.

KEPCO will use the ultra-supercritical technology which is the latest in coal power generation. (Leonardo Micua)
