Economy, top issue in next year’s election – Tañada

THE state of the economy, particularly the soaring prices of commodities, will be on top of the many issues that will be raised in the coming mid-term election next year against the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte.

This was stressed by former Quezon Province Rep. Lorenzo “Erin” Tañada III in a talk to newsmen in Dagupan City on November 20 in his first visit to Pangasinan.

He said the other issues ranged against the administration are joblessness, graft and corruption, and extra-judicial killings in the implementation of the war on drugs.

He expressed confidence that these issues will increase the chances of the opposition coalition to win big in the coming polls.

Tañada said the opposition can present a better solution to the economic problems of the country but did not elaborate on the details of its planned  solutions.

He expects the present economic crises will worsen since the President had admitted that there is nothing that the government can do against inflation caused by worldwide issues.

He described the President’s response as wanting in political will. In contrast, he said the opposition’s economic platform will arrest the soaring prices of commodities.

Asked about the chances of the opposition winning more seats since it only has 8 candidates instead of 12, Tañada said it is not a problem because the coalition led by Vice President Leni Robredo has determined that the fill-up rate of voters on their ballot is normally limited to seven to nine candidates.

After all,  no political party ever scored 12-zero in the senatorial race except during Marcos’ time when Imelda Romualdez Marcos ran against the late Senator Benigno Aquino Jr. in 1978. ( Leonardo Micua)
