DAGUPAN City’s  Sangguniang Panlungsod passed a resolution supporting the legislative measures now pending in Congress for the creation of the Department of Ocean, Fisheries and Aquatic Resources or DOFAR.

The resolution was proposed by Councilor Jose Netu Tamayo upon the request of the executive department through City Administrator Farah Decano.

The measure took note of a pending Senate Bill No. 1437, an act creating a Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources and providing for its powers and functions and for other purposes authored by former Senator Alan Peter Cayetano and a counterpart bill in the House of Representatives (No. 1427) filed by Iloilo 5th District Rep. Raul Tupas for the same purpose.

Tamayo said the creation of DOFAR will be a big boon to Dagupan City, a coastal area where fishing is one of the livelihood of its people.

The proposed DOFAR, which will replace the present Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR,) will be in a much better position to enforce all fisheries laws, rules and regulations intended to protect and conserve the country’s marine wealth and resources in its territorial sea and its Exclusive Economic Zone, Tamayo said.
