THE Dagupan City government and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) distributed 3,825 pieces of bamboo to some 51 fisherfolk from the Samahan ng Maliliit na Mangingisda sa Dagupan City (SMalManDaCi) during a brief ceremony on October 15.

The recipients were from barangays Calmay (Talaib), Carael (Talaib) and Lucao (Tokoc) whose illegal structures were taken down during a massive demolition last August but have shown their compliance by availing of licenses and permits from the city government.

Each beneficiary received 75 pieces of bamboo that would enable them to build fish cages with a standard size of 7x10m as stipulated in the amended fishing ordinance in the city.

The distribution of bamboos was a continuation of a previous turnover ceremony on October 10, where the same recipients already received nets, ropes and other materials necessary for new fish cages.

More than P1.2M worth of materials were given to this batch of fisherfolk as part of DOLE’s Sustainable Livelihood Assistance Program.

With the continuous support coming from both local and national government, the fisherfolk will now be able to start anew with their livelihood, said City Agriculture Officer Emma Molina.

The City Agriculture Office is working for another project assistance that will benefit fisherfolk and their families. (Verdelle De Vera/CIO)
