THE owners and operators of demolished illegal fish pens and other structures in Dagupan City received P1.2 million worth of materials for the construction of fish cages as their alternative legitimate livelihood.

The support was provided by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).

The 521 recipients from Barangays Lucao (Sitio Tucoc), Carael (Sitio Talaib) and Calmay (Sitio Talaib) had their operations legitimized by securing business permits and license plates earlier.

City Agriculturist Emma Molina said the city government requested DOLE for support after the demolition of the illegal structures in the river last August.

The beneficiaries will also receive bamboos in addition to the nets, ropes and other materials that were turned over.

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) also donated 677 packs of relief goods for fisherfolk in ten barangays registered under the city’s Aquaculture Lease Agreement (ALA), who were also directly affected by Typhoon “Ompong”.

In the same occasion, 682 life vests were turned over by the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) to passenger boat operators from Pugaro, Lomboy and Salapingao who ferry passengers to ensure their safety.

To date, the city currently has 548 authorized fishing structures in the river while applications of 80 are being processed. (With report fro CIO/VDV)
