LINGAYEN — Provincial government-sponsored Team Pangasinan left for Baguio City on Wednesday last week to compete in the forthcoming Batang Pinoy (BP) national finals originally scheduled September 15-21.

Provincial Sports Development and Management Council (PSDMC) Executive Officer Modesto Operania led the sendoff of the 167 athletes and coaches at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center (NRSCC).

On board six provincial buses were the 16-year old-and-below athletes and their 54 trainer-coaches and delegation officials.

“We are confident that Team Pangasinan will give a good fight in the Batang Pinoy national finals,” Operania said given the 16-day in-house training of the athletes at the NRSCC sponsored by the provincial government.

The preparation of Team Pangasinan was supported by the schools divisions of Department of Education in Pangasinan, and provincial chapters of National Sports Associations.

The young athletes will compete in 18 sporting events: archery, arnis, athletics, basketball, boxing, chess, karatedo, sepak takraw, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, volleyball, cycling, wrestling, wushu, futsal, and gymnastics.

Since it was formed under the administration of former governor and now 5th District Representative Amado I. Espino, III, Team Pangasinan has since been a perennial top contender in the BP Luzon Leg and national finals.

The Philippine Sports Commission and City of Baguio assured the safety of the delegates who are already in the Summer Capital. (PIO/ MGNO)
