FORMER Fourth District Rep. Gina de Venecia’s advocacy to care for mothers in the district during her incumbency has found permanency as an accredited party-list.

De Venecia happily announced last week that that Inang Mahal has been accredited by the Commission on Elections that can seek a seat in the House of Representatives in the May 2019 elections.

Manay Gina, as she is popularly known, told barangay officials of Dagupan and Manaoag during their last visit on Sept. 11 and 12, she submitted Inang Mahal as a party-list after she took the advice of her son, Rep. Christopher de Venecia, not to retire in politics and instead continue her advocacy through legislation in Congress.

“Inang Mahal is a party-list that will look after the needs of mothers,” De Venecia said.

De Venecia said mothers are the most marginalized sector of society, worse, poor mothers get married early at age 16, raise their kids but their husbands can hardly support the family’ needs.

She added that aside from raising kids, poor mothers mostly uneducated turn to selling food items to augment the family income.

Aggravating the situation of some, some mothers are married to abusive husbands, she said.

Sadly, De Venecia said, there are many mothers, who are in their 50s or 60s but do not have access to social security or health insurance yet they are also forced to work even in their senior years for their family upkeep, she added.

“Inang Mahal will defend them and work for their cause, it will push for legislation that will protect and support needy mothers across the country,” De Venecia said.

De Venecia launched the the successful Haven for Women when she was president of the Congressional Spouses Foundation Inc.

“Where will you bring mothers who are abused, disadvantaged, victims of armed conflicts? Good for Dagupan because it has its Haven for Women but what about the other cities and municipalities? ” she said.

She said it will address issues of mothers separated from their children like the Overseas Filipino Workers who have to leave home and their children to work and earn money to give them a better life. (PhilStar wire service)
