Capitol holds 8th Espino Chess Clinic, Sep 8-23

LINGAYEN —The 8th Gov. Amado Espino Chess Clinic, organized by the Pangasinan Sports Development and Management Council (PSDMC) in cooperation with the Pangasinan Chess League, has started yesterday, September 8 at the Pangasinan Training and Development Center (PTDC). It will end on September 23.

Sports Director Modesto M. Operania said participation is free since it is a training component of Pangasinan Chess Festival (PCF) launched eight years ago.

In the tradition of the PCF, the chess clinics serve as a prelude to big chess tournaments in Pangasinan notably the Pangasinan Age Group Championship and Gov. Amado Espino Open Chess Championship usually held on October and December of every year.

The series of chess clinics will be held at the Magsaysay Elementary School along Alvear Street in Lingayen town.

Lectures are scheduled on September 8 are – Basic Moves of Chess (Beginners), Basic Chess Tactics (Intermediate), Opening Strategies (Advanced); September 9 – Relative Values of the Pieces (Beginners), Advanced Chess Tactics (Intermediate), Middlegame Techniques (Advanced); September 22 – Basic Mating Techniques (Beginners), Basic Endgame Techniques (Intermediate), Advanced Chess Strategies (Advanced); September 23-  How to Meet Threats (Beginners), Basic Chess Strategies (Intermediate), Advanced Opening Strategies (Advanced).

PCF has produced prominent local woodpushers who are making big waves in the national and international scene, among them International Master Haridas Pascua, a native of Mangatarem town, who recently won the National Chess Championship in Makati City last June. Pascua is bound for the World Chess Olympiad on October 7, 2018 in Batumi, Georgia to join the best chess players in the country to compete with the top woodpushers worldwide. (Ruby R. Bernardino)
