Kap Art Celeste is new Liga president

THE Liga ng mga Barangay Federation finally has a new set of officers after an orderly election held in Dagupan presided by the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) in Pangasinan.

DILG Provincial Director Agnes de Leon said the election was attended by 46 Liga Presidents from the different towns and cities in the province, except Dagupan which is a chartered City and San Carlos City that didn’t show up to vote.

The 46 barangay chairmen were made to choose and elect candidates for the Liga’s positions from among two opposing groups: Art Bryan Celeste’s group against Jinky Zaplan’s group.

Celeste won with 25 votes as Liga President against Zaplan’s 21 votes.

Other elected federation officials are: Jose Peralta, vice president; Florence Tiu, auditor, and members of the board are directors Hercules Magliba, Michael Brian Perez, Edgardo Fontelera, Edgardo Terrado, Lester Bermudez, Crisanto Coloma Jr., Fernando Cruz and Maria Doriza Ramos.

Because it was anticipated as an election too close to call, policemen were at the place to monitor the proceedings attended by other top politicians in the province.

Upon his proclamation as the new Liga ng mga Barangay Federation, Celeste will be an ex-officio member the Sangguniang Panlalawigan.

“Hindi naman ibig sabihin na naging magkakalaban kami ay hati na ang Liga, pare-pareho naman tayong taga-Pangasinan na gustong manilbihan sa bayan. Gusto lang natin ipaabot ang aking pasasalamat sa mga sumuporta sa akin, una sa lahat ang aking mga magulang na nagpalaki sa akin nang maayos at sa mga nagtiwala sa akin na hindi ko kayo bibiguin,” Celeste said.

Celeste listed his priority projects for the barangays, among them introduction and promotion of livelihood in every barangay in support of the bamboo industry, cleanliness in the community as a support to boost the tourism aspect of the province especially coastal cities and education of the youth as a primary strategy to fight illegal drugs.

“Naniniwala tayo na ang edukasyon mula sa pagkabata, as a youth, ay malalaban natin ang illegal drugs, dapat nag-uumpisa sa bahay pa lang, bata pa lang ipinapaunawa na ang masamang epekto ng illegal drugs,” Celeste said.

Celeste who is only 22 years old is confident that his education as a graduate of Business Entrepreneurship in De La Salle University plus the guidance of his parents, Alaminos City Mayor Art Celeste and his colleagues, the Liga will have a positive voice in the Sangguniang Panlalawigan.
