THE resilience of Dagupeños is reflected in the hard work and efforts of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) during the recent floods that hit the city.

Last July, when the city was placed under the state of calamity after being submerged in water from monsoon rains and high tide, the CDRRMO was hard at work, conducting rescue operations throughout the city.

The quick response team responded to at least 48 medical emergencies, rescued 12 pregnant women (some, in labor), and 57 cases that needed medical transport.

Their combined efforts led to the rescue of more than 800 evacuees and their transfer to designated evacuation centers.

During the flooding, the city’s emergency hotline number “Belen 16911” also received a total of 357 calls while “Libreng Sakay” services, which provided free transport for commuters, transported at least 1,200 passengers per day.

In the second flood that hit Dagupan, CDRRMO launched preemptive rescue operations that brought evacuees to different evacuation centers before the flood could reach alarming levels.

Their teams braved through waist and chest-deep waters to rescue Dagupenos with severe medical cases that needed medical attention.

These included a three-year old, a ninety-year old couple, and persons with disability, among others.

Romeo Marquez, a 60-year old resident of Barangay Lasip Grande, was rescued by the CDRRMO. A diabetic patient with both legs amputated, Marquez appeared to be suffering from pneumonia at the time of his rescue.

Romeo’s son, Marvin, expressed his gratitude for the rescue of his ailing father.

Malalim po yung tubig sa amin, hanggang dibdib po. Napakahirap po. Maraming salamat po sa mga rescuer dito sa Dagupan na naghirap at nagbuwis ng buhay para po ma-rescue ang tatay ko,” said Marquez.

The efforts and successful rescue operations of the CDRRMO were a testament to local government’s brand of unliserbisyo, which is geared towards unlimited service to all Dagupenos. (Verdelle De Vera/CIO)
