PSU students, profs ask for Buted’s return as prexy

LINGAYEN—Students and professors of Pangasinan State University (PSU) had expressed their desire to have their university president who is serving nine months suspension for oppression be allowed to resume his post.

The sentiment was manifested during PSU’s commencement rites on June 29 through a message on a tarpaulin that was held by faculty members that read “Ibalik si President Buted sa PSU, ituloy ang evaluation ng second term niya”.

Evelyn Lomboy, a faculty member of PSU San Carlos City campus, said it was Buted who showed real love for the university.

She said they are aware of the Ombudsman decision suspending Buted “but we also know there was no sufficient investigation made and we feel the decision was unjust”.

Lomboy has been with PSU since 1980, and said it was only under Buted’s term when she felt the positive changes in the university.

She stressed that no one influenced them to express their sentiments, adding that they are still hopeful their plea will be heeded through the power of prayer.

Stanley Ruel Roque, a senior Bachelor of Secondary Education student in PSU San Carlos, said they want Buted’s return for his second term.

“Because I saw his dedication not only to the faculty but he is pro-students,” he said.

He said although Buted is not from Pangasinan “but his heart is with us, Pangasinenses”.

For her part, Marie Calire Briones, an instructor in PSU San Carlos, said Buted had a policy of transparency in the performance of PSU’s budget.

She added PSU became the top seven among the state colleges and universities across the country during Buted’s administration.

“We are pleading for the return of our president,” she said.

On Thursday, other groups of students and professors from other PSU campuses also rolled out tarpaulins during the first day of commencement rites of PSU on June 28 also in Stadia Dagupan where Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque was guest of honor and speaker.

Other tarpaulins carried messages “We support Dr. Buted”, “We love Pres. Buted “, “PSU San Carlos is endorsing second term of President Buted”, “Please Help Us Gov. Imee Bring Back Pres. Buted.”

Ilocos Norte Gov. Imee Marcos said she will help by relaying the professors’ and students’ plea to the Commission on Higher Education and other authorities.

Last April, Buted stepped down from his position as PSU president. The case against him stemmed from a complaint filed by Ricardo A. Tapia against Buted after he issued Office Memorandum No. 20, Series 2016, reassigning Tapia from PSU -Binmaley Campus to PSU-Urdaneta. (Eva Visperas)
