DENR CLEARING OPERATIONS

LINGAYEN—The Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) will inquire into the clearing operations being undertaken by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) on San Fabian beach in the wake of numerous reports or complaints from affected shed and establishment owners.

Board Member Liberato Villegas, chairman of the committee on tourism, recently invited the officials of both the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources (PENRO) and the Community Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to the legislative body’s question hour on June 4 to answer questions about the reported clearing operations at San Fabian beach.

His call was endorsed by his fellow 4th District Board Member Jeremy Agerico Rosario who said complaints of resort owners have also reached him because the clearing operations are affecting their livelihood.

Villegas said the DENR allegedly ordered shed and resort owners to set back their establishments 100 meters from the water because they were encroaching on the salvage zone.

At the same time, DENR has reportedly banned the entry of vehicles to the beach area by blocking the road leading to the beach.

“Where will the buses park whenever they bring tourists to the area?” he asked.

Rosario said the San Fabian beach is one of the most-frequented beaches in Pangasinan today and unlike some beaches elsewhere in the Philippines, the beaches in Pangasinan are not polluted.

He clarified that the provincial board will not only look into alleged violations of shed and resort owners but on what DENR intends to do in the area. (Leonardo Micua)
