THE integration of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) as an economic community is also pursued in the academe sector through exchange students program with Thailand.

The University of Luzon in Dagupan City welcomed last Tuesday the latest batch of students from the Rajabhat Maha Sarakham University in Thailand, along with Thai faculty members.

MacArthur Samson Jr., executive assistant to the university president, said the school “welcomes everyone” and sees productive integration in conventional education.

“Take advantage of the many resources that can offer you support, the interaction and the engagement, including the rich Filipino culture,” Samson said during the welcome program for the Thais.

Dr. Angel Reyna, director for UL’s international affairs, said the the partnership between UL and RMU started in 2013 and the renewal of a memorandum of agreement recognizes the importance of a university’s engagement in mutual understanding and responsibilities.

“The improvements are needed to spread and enhance academic achievement, dynamic exchange of experiences and strengthening of cultural ties,” Reyna said.

Khankeo Maprom, chairperson of the English Department of the RMU, said the collaboration was necessary to improve the English skills of their students.

“Communication must be attractive that is why we pursue collaboration and connection with the Philippines, particularly here in Pangasinan,” Maprom said and thanked UL for the warm hospitality accorded to them.

The two Thai students will be staying for a month. A new batch will come sometime this year.

After the welcome program, the delegates were given a tour of the Capitol complex in Lingayen town and the history sites in Dagupan City and the Hundred Islands in Alaminos City. (PIA-Pangasinan/(VHS)
