LINGAYEN–At the request of farmers, the committee on agriculture of the provincial board will investigate in aid of legislation reported deficiencies found in certified corn seeds being sold by a private supplier.

The decision to investigate stemmed from the privilege speech of Second District Board Member Raul Sison who reported that farmers in his district complained that the certified corn seed variety DEKALB 6999s they bought yielded only few grains in their cobs.

He cited the complaints of farmers from Urbiztondo, Mangatarem, Basista and San Carlos City that the DEKALB 6999s they bought from Monsanto Philippines, licensee of the corn seed variety, at P4,650 did not yield the promised results.

The corn farmers described their plight like a calamity after spending an average of P55,000 in cultivating one-hectare of corn farm.

He said they are demanding a reimbursement of their expenses, while others are contemplating to file claims for damages, he added.

To be invited in next week’s board session are some of the complaining farmers, the provincial and municipal agriculturists and local local distributors of DEKALB 6999s.

Provincial Agriculturist Dalisay Moya told newsmen that a parallel investigation is already being conducted by her office.

She confirmed that DEKALB 6999s certified corn seeds is being sold for the first time, adding that the earlier certified corn seeds from Monsanto Philippines yielded good harvests.
