THE city government is preparing the facilities of the Dagupan City Pool Site after it was chosen as venue for the swimming events of the 2018 Region 1 Athletic Association (R1AA) meet (February 11 to 16).

This was disclosed by Dagupan City Sports Commissioner Finnela Sim who said Mayor Belen Fernandez ordered the facelifting of the pool site not only for the R1AA swimming event but also for the continuous training of Dagupan swimmers.

Since Alaminos City, this year’s host of the R1AA has no Olympic-size swimming pool, Dagupan City was tapped to host the swimming events, Sim said.

Dagupan City’s Olympic-size swimming pool was built in 1995 for the swimming events of the Palarong Pambansa when Pangasinan was the host.

It was used again in 2015 when the Palarong Pambansa was re-staged in Pangasinan.

He said Dagupan athletes are in the midst of their training in various events in preparation for the meet.

Dagupan City was first runner up in the R1AA for the last two years, trailing only champion Pangasinan II.

In the past R1AA meets, the city never figured prominently in the top five among the competing delegations until the Fernandez administration took over.

Mayor Fernandez has since provided financial support for the athlete’s equipment and training, including several covered courts as training areas.

Sim said Fernandez promised financial rewards to athletes who win medals. (Leonardo Micua)
