Arrest of gambling cops, gov’t employees ordered

HERE’S a stern warning to policemen and government employees with gambling habits from the PNP regional director: You better not be caught entering casinos and other gambling establishments or else…

P/Chief Superintendent Romulo Sapitula made this clear in no unmistakable terms during his Bombo Radyo Dagupan interview on Feb. 8.

Sapitula said this is a long standing order in compliance with a law banning government employees and officials from entering casinos and other gambling establishments, and President Rodrigo Duterte has ordered its strict enforcement.

He said warning signs have been installed at entrances to casinos, cockpit arenas.

He said erring policemen and government employees will be charged if caught.

He said he has been receiving information that there are some policemen betting huge amounts.

“So where do their money come from?” he asked.

Sapitula advised gamblers among policemen and government employees to provide for more food for their family and their kids’ school needs instead.

On Feb. 2, a policeman and a mailman were arrested inside a cockpit arena in Barangay Laoag, Aguilar for reportedly violating President Duterte’s directive banning government workers from all gambling facilities.

Report from P/ Sr. Inspector Rowel Albano, town police chief, said arrested were PO1 Michael Moreno assigned to San Clemente, Tarlac Police Station and a resident of Barangay Malindong, Binmaley, and Mars Quiñones, letter carrier of Mangatarem Post Office (Philpost) and a resident of Calvo St., Barangay Poblacion, Mangatarem.

Quiñones was wearing a Philpost shirt during his arrest.

Moreno and Quiñones were the first government employees who were arrested when the town police implemented President Rodrigo Duterte’s directive last week banning government workers from all gambling facilities, primarily casinos.

The police put up last week a warning sign near the entrance of the cockpit arena that read: “Government employees are prohibited from gambling in this cockpit arena.” (Eva Visperas)
