TODAY’S centenarians are certainly the luckiest bunch. Past generations’ centenarians never had the attention and care from government like they do today.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD)- Field Office 1 reported that 437 centenarians in the region received P100,000 cash in financial gift this year.  That’s P43.7 million this year for them alone this year.

In his report, Director Marcelo Nicomedes Castillo said most of the centenarians who received this gift from the government are still very able, and not bedridden.

Passed in 2016, Under R. A. 10868, “An Act honoring and granting additional benefits and privileges to Filipino centenarians”, all Filipinos who reach the age of 100 years old, whether residing in the Philippines or abroad, shall be honored  with a Letter of Felicitation from the President of the Philippines congratulating the celebrant for his or her longevity and all Filipinos who live to 100 years, otherwise known as a centenarian, will receive P100,000 centenarian gift.

Meanwhile, other 122,396 senior citizens were provided stipend under the Social Pension Program for indigent senior citizens, Castillo said.

Social Pension also provided P3,000 as stipend to 64,179 pension beneficiaries more in the 3rd and 4th quarters this year.

Indigent senior citizens are entitled to a P500 monthly stipend to augment their daily subsistence and medical needs. (Senior citizens who have no pension from private or government institutions, regular income or support from their families may enroll in this program. (Eva Visperas)
