A newly born baby died from suffocation when his protective young father sleeping beside him inside the OB ward 1 of Bayambang District Hospital (BDH) unknowingly covered his child’s face with his leg as he kept the latter secure under his legs.

P/Superintendent Ronald Sacyat, Bayambang chief of police, said the hospital determined that five-day old victim, Baby Clark John, died due to suffocation.

Initial police investigation showed that on November 24, the 16-year old mother, Jocelyn Lubong, and her baby was joined by her partner, Chris John, and slept in her ward bed inside the OB Ward 1.

It was 4:30 a.m. the following day, when she awoke and saw that a leg of Chris John was covering the baby’s face. She pushed the leg off the baby’s face only to find the latter already unconscious.

Jocelyn rushed the child to the delivery room where Dr. Rogelio Tersias pronounced the baby dead.

Sacyat said the incident was referred to the Municipal Social Welfare Office to assist the mother in case she wanted to file a criminal case, but she did not.

“She didn’t file a case because she said she was aware it was an accident,” Sacyat said, (Nora Dominguez)
