THE campaign of the Lyceum Northwestern University Dukes, Northern-Central Luzon champions, to clinch the championship of the Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) Northern-Southern Luzon area was foiled by visiting Naga College Foundation (NCF) Tigers, 79-75.

The NCF TIGERS leaned on its tall and hefty Nigerian import Emmanuel Ojovla who exploded with 25 points, seven of the team’s last quarter 12 points output, to edge LNU in the championship knockout match of the PCCL Northern-Southern Luzon area held on November 30 at Dr. Salvador T. Duque Field House in Dagupan City.

The Dukes, winner over Central Luzon champ Mary of Queen College of Pampanga, 112-94, on November 29, suddenly could not find the range as forward Roxar Melendez missed nine of his ten three-point attempts, after trailing the Tigers in all first three quarters, 15-21, 34-37 and 63-67.

Dukes got its rhythm back at the halfway mark with a bomb of treys led by Mariano Catabay to stalk the Bicolanos by just two marks, ,72-74, 3:27 minutes left, but unable to contain the six-foot-six pesky center Ojovla especially the vital rebound in the crucial dying minutes of the game to eventually yield the game by four points.

Catabay was the lone Dukes to score in double figures with a game high of 26 marks including six treys, while the Tigers wily guard Fritzon Germono contributed 19 for the champs.

Meanwhile, the Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University (DMMMSU) Slingers of La Union thwarted the University of Luzon (UL) Golden Tigers, 51-33, to win the finals of the 3×3 basketball tournament. Dukes landed third. (Jesus Garcia, Jr.)
