Month-long Dagupan City Fiesta to kick off Dec. 5

A Grand Parade along the main streets of the city, a street dancing competition, a drum and lyre contest at the city plaza and the lighting of the Christmas Tree in front of the city museum will kick off the month-long Dagupan City Fiesta on Dec. 5.

Epee Rafanan of the 2017 City Fiesta Executive Committee said 14 contingents of street dancers from the secondary private and public schools will compete when they march along the streets with their drum and lyre counterparts.

The street dancing competition will take place in the streets while the drum and lyre competition will be held at the city plaza.

The confirmed participants in the drum and lyre competition are: Umingan National High School, San Jacinto National High School, Don Mariano Jimenez Memorial Polytech Institute of Dasol, Lobong National High School of  San Jacinto, St. Philomena’s Academy of Pozorrubio, San Felipe Integrated School of San Nicolas, Daniel Maramba National High School of  Sta. Barbara, San Nicolas National High School, Urdaneta National High School, Estanza National High School of Lingayen, St. Adelaide School Philippines of Burgos, Zaratan Educational Institute of Aguilar, Dagupan City National High School and Virgen Milagrosa University Foundation Drum and Bugle Corps.

The lighting of the Christmas tree in front of the city museum will be led by Mayor Belen T. Fernandez and the members of the Sangguniang Panlungsod after the competitions.

The crowd -drawing Paseo de Belen and the Fiesta Carnival will be back at the De Venecia Expressway Extension on December 2.

Paseo de Belen will feature 26 different nativity scenes (belen) by different barangay but only 22 will compete for best entries. Cash prizes will be awarded on December 27 during the Barangay Night at the city plaza.

Eighteen barangays will set up their own nativity scenes while 13 barangays agreed to be clustered. The Dagupan City National High School, Dagupan City Police Station, Dagupan Electric Corporation and CSI Group of Companies will present their interpretation of the ‘Belen’.

First placer will receive P50,000; second place, P30,000; and third placer P20,000.  Winners will be announced during the Barangay Night on December 27. (Joseph Bacani)
