Fisherfolk in West Pangasinan get livelihood support

THE Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) turned over today various fishery livelihood projects for the fishery folks in Pangasinan.

BFAR Region 1 Director Nestor Domenden said P12.9 million worth of fishery projects were awarded last Friday out of which P8.9 million worth was given to fisher folk from Lingayen, Sual, Infanta, Binmaley, Labrador, Bugallon, Calasiao, Sta. Barbara, Mangaldan, Dagupan, San Fabian, Urdaneta City and of P4 million worth of fishery projects in Bolinao and Alaminos City.

According to Domenden distributed were fish stalls, post harvest equipment, sorters, cooler boxes, stainless tables, deboning kits, fish carts, ring nets and payaws, and fiber glass fishing boats.

Domenden was joined by Gov. Amado Espino III and 4th District Rep. Leopoldo Bataoil in the distribution of the fishery projects in Lingayen while National Security Council Adviser Hermogenes Esperon, 1st District Rep. Jesus Celeste, PNP Provincial Director P/Sr. Superintendent Ronald Lee, Bolinao Mayor Arnold Celeste and Alaminos City Mayor Arthur Celeste.

Domenden said the distribution of equipment was aimed at supporting the food security and sustainable income for the fisher folk.

Espino thanked BFAR for the project even as he appealed to fisher folk to help protect the rivers and water sources for their own benefit.

He also advised the fishermen to organize themselves as a group so they can also avail of the program of the provincial government that extends financial assistance to livelihood projects.

The governor said the provincial government continues to support the tilapia fingerling distribution and mangrove planting to protect the fish sanctuaries in addition to providing technical assistance and technologies to fisher folk.

Bataoil told his constituents that his office is open to suggestions how they can be helped further in their livelihood. (Nora Dominguez)
