Common terminal for PUBs, PUJs sought

THE Dagupan City Council passed a resolution seeking the establishment of a common terminal in the city away from the congested central business district in the city.

Councilor Luis Samson Jr. proponent of the resolution, said a common terminal must be set up in the city to serve all commuters going to-and-from the city.

The present holding area on M.H. del Pilar Street put up by a private company on a lot previously occupied by the defunct Pantranco will soon be removed to give way to the SM City Center Dagupan.

In the resolution, the SP asked City Engineer Virginia Rosario to scout for feasible sites in the city for the common terminal.

Councilor Alvin Coquia, chairman on the committee on transportation, earlier suggested Barangay Lucao or Tapuac as possible site of the common terminal.

Coquia said a new common terminal is necessary as the city council is now set to enforce a long standing ordinance banning terminals whose ingress and egress are located 100 meters away from a street intersection.

The terminals of Victory Liner, Five Star Bus, Solid North as well as the passenger vans and mini-buses which are all located near street intersections will be closed to enforce the ordinance.

The Public Order and Safety Office chief Carlito Ocampo had recommended the strict implementation of the provisions of the 1977 ordinance because passenger vehicles entering and exiting from the illegal terminals are obstructing the flow of vehicles.

Ocampo said more choke points are expected in Dagupan when the SM City Center Dagupan on M.H. del Pilar Street and City Mall on Mayombo Road start operations.

The city government is open to a common terminal to be operated by the private sector. (Leonardo Micua)
