Catalan tops Bataoil bikefest

THREE-time Southeast Asia Games gold medalist Alfie Catalan of San Manuel town showed his international form in short distance road racing by ruling the open category event of the 2017 Congressman Leopoldo N. Bataoil Cycling Challenge held at the Maramba Boulevard loop in Lingayen on October 22.

The lanky five-foot-eleven Catalan, 35, broke away from main pack of 41 riders 20 minutes after the start, towing town mate Dennis Gabaldon and ex-Tour champ Reynaldo Navarro of San Jacinto.

Catalan outsprinted his two breakaway partners in the last 300 meters to win the 45 minutes plus two laps criterium road race.

Warren Bordeos of Laoac and two-time Marlboro Tour runner-up Merculio, Ramos, Jr. (Binalonan) landed fourth and fifth, respectively.

In the 40-59 years old category, Ricky Zabala of Laoac, Benjie Nituan (Binalonan), Raffy Fernandez (Dagupan City), Reynald Trinidad (Balungao) and Arnold Garcia (Sta. Maria) were the top five finishers.

The senior citizens division top five winners were: Arturo Otanes (San Quintin); Danny Bartolome (Urdaneta City); Ronald dela Cruz (Malasiqui), Manny Ugaban (Dagupan City); Alex Jugo (San Fabian).

Among the Metro Dagupan City Cycling Club, Inc. the top five finishers were: Engr. Rodolfo Boy Dion; Robert Carulla; Noel Bumanlag; Rey Adaban; Richard Molina.

All the top five winners in each category received P3,000, P2,000, P1,000, P750 and P500, plus medal apiece.

The bikefest was in conjunction with the natal celebration of Bataoil. (Jesus Garcia, Jr.)
