Massive planting of Rosal sought

DAGUPAN’S OFFICIAL FLOWER

RESIDENTS of Dagupan are being encouraged to plant in their gardens the white flowering plant called ‘rosal” (gardenia jasminoides ellis) whose blossom is the official flower of Dagupan City.

ROSALThis fact was determined from a research conducted by the Dagupan City History Culture and Arts (DCHCA) chaired by Dr. Gonzalo T. Duque, citing the book “Symbols of the State Republic of the Philippines” acknowledging ‘Rosal’ as the official flower of Dagupan ever since.

Dr. Duque wrote the Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) urging the legislative body to pass a resolution or ordinance urging residents of the city to plant “rosal” and when in season use their flowers during official functions of the city government.

The SP, taking note of Duque’s letter, assigned the committee on culture and the arts headed by Councilor Jeslito Seen to conduct a committee hearing prior to the adoption of the resolution or ordinance for the purpose.

Duque said the book ” Symbols of the State Republic of the Philippines” is a compilation of the official symbols of the central government and the official seals, flags and flowers of the chartered cities and provinces of the country shows that rosal “is the official flower of Dagupan City”.

He noted that rosal has not caught the consciousness of Dagupeños today, as shown by the fact that rosal plant is not commonly grown in the city.

Such a resolution or ordinance encouraging the planting of “rosal” would enhance the foremost objective of DCHAO in the preservation and promotion of Dagupan’s rich cultural heritage, said Duque. (Leonardo Micua)
