Youth urged to donate blood

HELP SAVE A LIFE

CITING the need for blood for victims of calamities, Dagupan City Councilor and Philippine Red Cross (PRC) executive Maybelyn Fernandez encouraged more people to donate blood regularly.

“Hindi na nauubusan ng dugo sa blood center natin…but in cases of disaster, kulang pa rin,” she remarked when she graced the PRC Pangasinan Chapter Biennial Recognition Ceremony on July 28, 2015 held at the Star Plaza Hotel in this city.

The city lawmaker, also the PRC Chairperson on Blood Services Committee, cited a United Nations (UN) study which requires one percent of the total population in the area should be giving blood on a regular basis to make availability of blood sustainable for the populace.

Ms. Fernandez said the country, despite the increasing number of blood donors, has not reached even half of the UN target and encouraged the youth sector to get involved in the blood donation program. .

“Join the Red Cross because it will be a good learning experience,” she said enjoining the youth sector. “You are not just giving blood, you are extending someone else’s life,” she said of the PRC advocacy.

According to PRC Pangasinan chapter administrator, Florame Magalong, as of 2014, there are only over 30,000 members in the province.

Meanwhile, the year’s awardees were: Individual Highest Blood Service Awardees were Dr. Sheldon Steven Aquino, Cris Zuñiga, and Louie Fernandez; Testimonial Plaque Awardees, University of Luzon and the Virgen Milagrosa University Foundation.

Blood Services Outstanding Awardees: Alcala local government, CSI The City Mall, University of Pangasinan, Ang Dating Daan- Dagupan, Bombo Radyo-Dagupan, Energy FM Dagupan, and Panda Fire Volunteer.

Also cited were 41 Blood Galloner Awards, eight Certificates of Appreciation (individual category); 16 Certificates of Appreciation, 21 Diplomas of Service Awards, and 23 Scrolls of Honor (group/organization category). – (Johanne R. Macob)
