Most detainees arrested for drugs

ABOUT 70 to 75 per cent of the 650 detainees at the Dagupan District Jail of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology are facing drug-related cases, but unlike the anomalous and scandalous situation at the National Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa, there are no special privileges accorded to any detainee.
Jail Chief Inspector Kenneth Bid-ing gave this assurance to the local media and attributed the large percentage to the intensified campaign of the police and Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency operatives against illegal drugs.
“Many are eventually released but more are jailed,” he said.
He said no special treatment is given to any of their inmates.
“No cellular phone. We are very concerned about the security in the facility,” he told local reporters yesterday during the KBP Forum.
The detainees are also prohibited to form gangs or group alliances, he said.
Bid-ing said because the BJMP facility, designed for 100 inmates only, is overcrowded, some already use hammocks on rotation basis.
The national and local governments have already been asked to provide funds for the facilities’ expansion. (Tita Roces)
