LIVELIHOOD FOR RESIDENTS

THIRTY families from different barangays of Dagupan received from Mayor Belen Fernandez three gilts each to help intensify efforts to boost swine raising and provide additional source of income to indigent families.

The project not only seeks to provide additional income for families but also help reduce the volume of garbage being delivered to the open dumpsite site as the pigs will eat left-over food and vegetable shedding from the market.

Recipients of gilts also received bags of feeds.

Fernandez was informed by Agriculture Officer Emma Molina that like many towns in Pangasinan, Dagupan is conducive to growing swine but only in backyards.

Dagupan has no wide area for commercial hog raising. This is not feasible in the city as it might affect the environment.

Fernandez also intensified backyard gardening in the barangays to provide families their chief sources of food without them buying the commodities from the market.

Families have been encouraged to plant vegetables in their barangays to supply their daily needs.

She cited the highly successful “Gulayan sa Paaralan” launched by the City Schools Division with the help of the city whose products were not only used to supplement the schools feeding program but also provided fresh vegetables to families of pupils and students.

Fernandez said “Gulayan sa Barangay” can make the whole of Dagupan self -sufficient in vegetables and will no longer be dependent on deliveries from Baguio and other towns
