Dagupan triathletes return as Ironmen

WHILE the city slept soundly last Sunday morning, a small group of professionals and businessmen from the city tested their mettle in the ironman challenge in Cebu City last August 3 carrying the city’s name. And the team passed the triathlon’s standard with flying colors.

Together they formed the Dagupan Triathlon Team. Together, they took the challenge posed by Cobra Ironman 70.3 for the first time.

The team was originally composed of lawyer Arginald Esguerra (Esguerra Law), Arnold Lioanag (Realtor- Ragtime Bldg. 2010), Dr. Armando Bonifacio (Entrepreneur & banker – BHF Bank), Albert Manuyag (Amka Trading – Medical Supplies) 5) Dr. Vivencio V. Villaflor III (Surgeon – DDVMH).

They were later joined by Aaron Lioanag (Registered Nurse), Alexander Borras (Dagupan Copy Center) & Albert Manuyag to form the relay team. Neville Bañez (Cycleogical Bikeshop) is the latest addition to the team.

Esguerra, Bonifacio & Lioanag registered for the individual category and relay team.

It was in 2013 when they, initially as a regular biker’s group of five, decided to be more competitive after initially joining a triathlon in Subic, the 1st Bangus Festival Triathlon and the Pistay Dayat in Lngayen.

They trained hard for the Ironman challenge, from open sea swimming to biking and running.

The Cebu Ironman (an international triathlon franchise) was about a 1.2-mile swim that began on the white sands of Shangri-La’s Mactan Resort, a one-loop course run parallel to the shoreline; a two-loop, 56-mile bike course that took athletes toward the main island of Cebu through the coastline highway, and a13.1-mile, and finally, a two-loop run course.

Borras ranked 14th out of 155 in his division with 857 overall rank out of 2,500 participants, Manuyag finished 37th in his division out of 155 with 857 overall rank, Aaron Lioanag finished 33th out of 155 in his division with an overall 746 standing.

Arnold Lioanag ranked 170th in his division with overall rank 1,759; Esguerra ranked 331in his division with overall 1,642 finish while Bonifacio’s division 123 rank finished 1,329 overall from a field of 2,500.

The Dagupan Tri Relay Team finished with a 37 overall rank out of 155 relay teams.
