18 PUSHERS ARRESTED SINCE JULY

THE Dagupan police has arrested 18 illegal drug pushers since July this year but the three Bonuan barangays notorious for trading remain under tight watch.

Supt. Christopher Abrahano, chief of the Dagupan City police station said the arrest of pushers has significantly reduced the amount of illegal drugs being sold in the streets but the bigger traders behind the supply remain at large, particularly those in Bonuan Binloc, branded by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency as a main drug hub in northern Luzon.

“There are still more to be arrested in this barangay as we believe that traders laid low for the moment after PDEA named it as number one hotspot on drugs,” Abrahano said.

Aside from Bonuan Binloc, the other barangays under close surveillance are Bonuan Gueset and Bonuan Boquig.

Abrahano said the 18 drug pushers were caught in at least nine operations conducted by the police where at least 222 grams of illegal drugs or shabu were seized.

About 20% of the drug buy-bust operations were conducted in Bonuan Binloc.

“It is still a challenge for us to zero in on illegal drug trade in Bonuan area,” the chief of police admitted.

At the same time, the Philippine National Police also conducts activities such as seminars and distribution of flyers to discourage the youth from getting into illegal drugs.

Abrahano said they are also continuously coordinating with the barangay officials and visiting communities to strengthen their grasp on the actual situation on the ground.

Abrahano expressed the need for revitalizing not only the city anti- drug abuse council but also the barangay anti- drug abuse council in each of the 31 barangays.

“We need information from the grassroots level which is the community itself. The community people are the ones who really know the situation and the people who are involved in the illegal drug trade”, Abrahano said.
