Gilon-gilon Street Dancing and Kalutan ed Dalan are big hits

2013 BANGUS FESTIVAL

APRIL 30 was a day of fun and merriment in Dagupan City with over one million guests and Dagupeños filling the streets of the downtown area to take part in the Kalutan ed Dalan, the culmination and signature event of the Bangus Festival.

More than 800 grills lined the AB Fernandez Avenue and Perez Boulevard set-up by local and national corporations and entrepreneurs.

Mayor Benjamin Lim led the ceremonial lighting of the grills with his wife Celia, and joined by this year’s festival chairman Alvin Coquia, co-chairmen Marriane Ang and Engr. Bobby Llamas, Councilors Brian Lim, Jesus Canto, Red Erfe-Mejia, Emong Vallejos, former congresswoman Kate Gordon, senatorial candidates Cynthia Villar, Ernie Maceda and Puerto Princesa Mayor Edward Hagedorn

“We promise to work hard and deliver a more exciting Bangus Festival celebration in the coming years,” said Lim, hinting on his expectation that he will be re-elected in the May 13 election.

A dozen stages were set up for rock bands and artists, both local and from Manila, who provided live music and entertainment during the actual grilling.

GILON-GILON

A day before the Kalutan, the Gilon-gilon street dancing competition was staged that saw the participation of the city’s 31 barangays.

Emerging champion again this year was Barangay Lucao, its fourth consecutive victory.

Other winners in 2nd to 5th place were: Tapuac, Poblacion Oeste, Bonuan Binloc, and Tebeng.

“I also praise these dancers for facing the challenge of a new concept of the contest as they rendered their performances in three stages along the parade route,” said the mayor in his speech.

“In this year’s competition, we decided to present the competition on the streets because we saw the very limited audience that the city plaza can accommodate. At least on the streets, more guests and Dagupeños can admire their routines,” said Coquia.

The six ‘ritual’ sites, where the dancers performed their choreographed dances were at the Perez Boulevard in front of the University of Luzon, the Rizal Street crossing Perez Blvd., at the M.H. del Pilar street infront of the Development Bank of the Philippines, at the Jollibee Junction and at the AB Fernandez Avenue in front of Marimar. Their final performance was staged at the city plaza.

The competition also featured the creativity of every barangay in dressing their Festival Kings and Queens.

This year’s festival king was Mohammad Domingo from Pogo Chico and the festival queen was Klariza Silva from Lucao.

Lucao was won the best costume category, followed by Tebeng and Tapuac in 2nd and 3rd place, respectively. (CIO)
