BUENLAG and Maasin repulsed their respective opponents on May 16 in their third and final game of the semis and both reached the finals of the Mangaldan SK Inter-Barangay Basketball Tournament in the best-of-three series slated this week at the Macario Ydia Development Center in Mangaldan.

The Buenlag youngsters of Jazy Garcia who convincingly won the first game, 67-55, over Maasin, lost the second match by a hairline, 86-84, to force a sudden-death playoff. Banking on its forward-center, LNU’s varsity player Aljick Aquino scoring a game high 36 points mostly done inside the box, Carlo Bagbagay and Reymark Quinto surprised their foes with stifling defense in the fourth and final quarter that rattled the Maasin boys at the homestretch and forced the perennial champions to commit costly errors. The two scored their tournament high 12 points apiece helping their team to win by seven points, 81-74.

Malabago, on the other hand, after leading precariously at the half with just three points, 35-32, found themselves in a snag at the last juncture, but eventually able to manage the front up to the end, relying on its key player Kevin Santos scoring a game high 25 points to lift his team with a five-point advantage, 83-78, against archrival Anolid. —JAGJr.
