PISTA’Y DAYAT 2013

PANGASINAN, with a long coast facing the Lingayen Gulf, is once again celebrating the sea and its bounty with the annual Pista’s Dayat (Sea Festival).

The festival started last April 19 with street dancing and a drum and lyre exhibition at the Capitol Beach Front in Lingayen.

Governor Amado Espino Jr., leading the opening ceremony, took pride in his administration’s efforts of transforming the capitol area into a tourist destination for both locals and visitors saying, “Dati itong lugar na ito ay kinatatakutan puntahan sa gabi dahil madilim, walang ilaw.  Dati ang lugar na ito ay marumi. Wala kang halos makita sa buhangin kundi plastic, bubog at basura.”

Various activities have been lined up for the festival, including musical performances every night at the Pangasinan Development and Training Center, where the 6th Pangasinan Tourism and Trade Expo is also being held until May 3.

On May 1, the traditional day of celebrating the Pista’y Dayat, activities include: Thanksgiving Mass, Sand Sculpting Viewing, Palaro sa Tabing Dagat II with Kite Flying, Banca Parada with Dragon Boat Exhibition, Drum & Bugle Exhibition, Water Sports Activities- Parasailing and Banana Boat Rides, Beach Volleybelles Finals, Sayawan ed Aplaya Competition, and Limgas na Pangasinan Pageant Night.

NO FIREWORKS

Provincial Administrator Rafael Baraan said that unlike in previous years, there will be no fireworks for the entire duration of the celebration in consideration of the environment.

“Fireworks display is not worth the damage to the environment,” Baraan said, stressing that there are other means of celebrating the festivity.

He also pointed out that the ordinance banning the use of plastics and styrofoam on food products will be strictly enforced.

Espino said the provincial government, which has won in recent years various awards related to projects on environmental protection, aims to continue with its campaign until all Pangasinenses fully understand and embrace the importance of caring for nature.

The governor, who is running for re-election in the May 13 election, said he envisions taking some activities of the next Pista’y Dayat celebration in the planned ecotourism zone located in three Lingayen barangays — Sabangan, Estanza, and Malimpuec – currently under development.—Johanne R.
