SP approves permits for tricycle operators

AFTER being delayed for lack of quorum the previous week, the Sangguniang Panlungsod finally approved in its regular session last January 28 the renewal of authority to operate motorized tricycles–for-hire in the city.

On motion of Councilor Karlos Reyna, 168 applicants were granted permits in accordance with the requirements prescribed under Ordinance No 1883-2006 as amended by Ordinance No. 1949-2010.

Some 200 applicants already received their permits last Jan. 14.

Vice Mayor Belen Fernandez, chair of the SP, cracked the whip and called on all SP members to attend the session last week after the council failed to hold two regular sessions since the start of the year because of lack of quorum.

Fernandez, who is now part of the minority in the SP, pointed out that the new majority has the responsibility to act promptly on the city’s legislative agenda citing the failure of the body to act on the many applications for tricycle permits, budgets of barangays and other matters.

The only times the city council had a 100% attendance particularly of the new majority were the times when the sale of the MC Adore Hotel was being debated.

Present during the January 28 session were Councilors Alipio Serafin Fernandez, Karlos Reyna, Redford Christian Erfe-Mejia, Jesus Canto, Jeslito Seen, Alvin Coquia, Guillermo Vallejos and Brian Lim, although the last two came in late.

On official business that day were Councilors Maybelyn Fernandez and Luis Samson Jr. while Councilor Guillermo Vallejos was on sick leave.
